Iona defeats Fairfield 1-0 in Men's Soccer Quarterfinals

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – The quarterfinal game between fourth seed Fairfield University and fifth seed Iona College ended in the Gaels winning 1-0 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Florida on Friday, November 6.
Oscar Gonzalez scored with 4:38 seconds left in the first half gave the Iona Gaels the one goal lead from a penalty shot going into the back of the net. The first half set the tone for a defensive game with only 4 shots total for both teams, Iona with 3 and Fairfield with only 1 shot. In the second half, the pace picked up slightly as the two teams combined for 16 shots total with Fairfield shooting 10 times and Iona recorded six shots.
Gonzalez gets his second goal of the season and Iona’s goalkeeper Julian Petrello notches his sixth shutout of the season.
Iona avenged a lost to Fairfield in the regular season on October 7 to move on to the semifinals and to face Monmouth University on Sunday November 8 on ESPN3. The winner of that game will move on to play in the 2015 MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship on Monday, November 9.
