Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Preseason Poll

EDISON, NJ - Defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field champion Monmouth University has been named the preseason favorite to repeat according to a vote of the league's 8 head coaches. Monmouth earned a total of 54 points while receiving first place votes from six of the eight school’s head coaches. 

In 2015, Monmouth's men captured its second MAAC Indoor Track and Field trophy after a great performance in both the track and the field events. The Hawks captured two new meet records, including senior Ahmier Dupree completing the 60 meter dash in 6.84. Junior Dylan Capwell earned Most Outstanding Performer for the Hawks, while breaking the MAAC record in the 800 meter with a time of 1:46.82, and was a member of the first place 4x400 meter relay team. 

Coming in second for the men’s teams is Manhattan College totaling 46 points from the coaches. Rider University finished third in the preseason poll tallying 43 points.  Next in fourth place is Iona College who received 37 points, followed by Saint Peter’s University coming in fifth place with a total of 30 points.  Canisius College came in sixth place by receiving 19 points, while Marist College was right behind with 16 points giving them the seventh seeded spot.  Newcomer Siena College rounded out the poll coming in eighth place with a total of 8 points. 

Defending conference champion Monmouth University has also been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2016 MAAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship according to a vote of the league's 9 head coaches. Monmouth received a total of 71 points with eight out of the nine coaches' first place votes. Last year, the Hawks claimed their second consecutive MAAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship. 

At the 2015 Championship, Monmouth had strong performances in multiple events which led them to become the top finisher of the day. Three current members of the team finished in the top eight for the 400, including juniors Tionna Garner, Nia Driver, and Mckenna Coakley. In the 800, the Hawks had four members finish in the top eight, including sophomore Allie Wilson, junior Jenna Cupp, senior Kendal Hand, and sophomore Danielle Leavitt.  For the field events, Monmouth senior Aziza Ahmed earned a second place finish with a weight throw of 52’ 1.25 and sophomore Domoah Kutu-Akoi also earned a second place finish in the long jump after clearing 18’10” at the Championship. 

Coming in second for the women’s teams is Quinnipiac University who received 63 points from the coaches. Rider University earned the third seeded spot with 56 points.  Coming in fourth place is Manhattan College with a total of 49 points.  Next is Iona College in fifth place who received 37 points, closely edging out sixth seeded Saint Peter’s University who received 35 points.  Coming in seventh place is Marist College with a total of 25 points, while Canisius College is the eighth seed with 15 points.  Newcomer Siena College rounded out the poll in ninth place with 9 points.
