MAAC Sports
EDISON, N.J. – Fairfield University has been selected as the MAAC men’s golf preseason favorite according to a vote of the league’s nine head coaches. The Stags look to capture the 2015 MAAC Men’s Golf Championship crown after tying for second at last year’s championship with Monmouth.
Fairfield closed out its 2014 fall season by capturing first place at the NEIGA Championship in Brewster, Massachusetts. In addition to the team title, the Stags also saw two individual titles in the fall. At the 2014 ECAC Championships, on Sept. 29-30, senior Ricky Dowling won the individual crown while leading the team to a second-place finish. At the Rutgers Invitational, on Sept. 19-20, classmate Steve Burak took the individual title while pacing the Stags to a third place finish.
Fairfield earned 76 total points, including six of the nine first-place votes. Coming in second, was defending MAAC Champions, Saint Peter’s, which received 67 points and the remaining three first-place votes. Monmouth (58) finished in third place, followed by Iona (50) in fourth, and Siena (47) in fifth. Both Canisius and Manhattan were tied for sixth with 35 points apiece. Rider recorded 22 points, good for eighth place, while Niagara closed out the poll with 15 points.
The 2015 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held April 24-26 at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
