EDISON, N.J. – Fairfield University freshman forward Casey Smith was named Division I Women’s Basketball New England “Rookie of the Week” by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC).
Smith tallied double digits scoring in both of Fairfield's two wins this week. She was the star in the win against Iona, tallying her first career double-double with 20 points, and a personal best in rebounds with 10 and assists with six all without committing a turnover. Smith out-rebounded the conference's best rebounder in the game and collected five offensive boards. Smith shot 60 percent from the floor, and scored 15 points in the second half for the win.
The first year forward would keep the Stags in the game against Monmouth and collect the game-tying jumper with 35 seconds remaining to force the game into overtime. Smith also notched a career-high four blocks in the contest. For the week, Smith averaged 17 points, six rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and shot 52 percent from the floor.
