Maroon & Gold Legacy: Chronicling 75 Years of Iona College Sports
Iona College alumni unveil athletics book to honor school’s diamond anniversary
The newly released hardcover book, Maroon & Gold Legacy: Chronicling 75 Years of Iona College Sports, is the first and only definitive account of Iona College athletics. Iona alumni Peter Kollmann and Jeff Castellano, both of the Class of 2006, wrote the commemorative book, in collaboration with Iona College and Mountain Lion, the publisher, to honor Iona’s 75-year anniversary.
Iona College, with men’s basketball as its only sport in its founding year of 1940, was one of the six original schools in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) when the league began in 1980. The MAAC’s first commissioner, Jim McDermott, is one of 18 “Greatest Gaels” featured in the book. The 208-page publication has more than 230 photos.
Maroon & Gold Legacy consists of a preface, introduction, eight chapters – with men’s basketball as Chapter 1 – and a statistical appendix of all 21 Iona varsity sports. A sneak peek is available on Facebook, at facebook.com/mglegacy. The appendix presents an info graphic featuring the
Five main sponsors, including the Iona College Office of Advancement & External Affairs and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (for “Greatest Gael” and NBA All-Star Richie Guerin), made the project financially feasible. Co-authors Kollmann and Castellano researched every school newspaper and yearbook, and also interviewed more than 130 people.
At a price of $27.50 plus tax, the book will be available for purchase in Iona’s Hynes Athletics Center main hallway during all February men’s basketball games. Or, send your name, address and a $39 check payable to “Maroon & Gold Legacy” to the address below, and a copy will be mailed to you within 7-10 days. Price includes tax, shipping and handling.
