Comments by MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor on Quinnipiac Women's Basketball Season, 20-0 League Record
MAAC Sports
“Congratulations to the Quinnipiac University women’s basketball team on going undefeated in MAAC play and setting a record with 20 league wins. As the first MAAC team to go undefeated since Marist College accomplished the feat in 2013, Coach Tricia Fabbri’s squad set a high standard of excellence by testing themselves in nonconference play early in the year. That challenging schedule prepared them well for a long conference season that allows for few mistakes to go undefeated, and has resulted in a 28-3 overall record so far this season.
I always think a team needs to tell a story with their season’s accomplishments. While the Bobcats’ season is just entering post-season play, and the story not yet finished, it does presents a great tale to date:
Did Quinnipiac challenge themselves in non-conference scheduling?
3-2 to Top 100 teams including wins over:
@Drexel
Albany
Army
Also wins over:
Hampton
@ Saint Joseph’s
Alabama (@Mohegan Sun)
Scheduling for mid-majors is always tough, but with no bottom 50 teams in the RPI on its nonconference schedule, and with its weakest opponent at 181 in the RPI, Quinnipiac tested itself on a national level, particularly by playing No. 1 ranked Notre Dame on the road. Additionally, the Bobcats have played the eighth most difficult non-league schedule, and their nonconference RPI ranks 15th. In total, five of the Bobcats’ 11 nonconference games came against teams ranked in the top 100 of the latest RPI report.
As Coach Fabbri noted on today’s MAAC conference call, “I truly believe our body of work puts us in that conversation” of top AQ or At-Large teams being considered for the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships.
I would concur on that assessment. Her team has set new standards, not unlike Marist before them, and her team reminds me of the last MAAC undefeated men’s basketball team that played in the Times Union Center for the NCAA AQ, the great 1990 La Salle squad.”
