ALBANY, N.Y. – No. 1 Quinnipiac University will face No. 2 Marist College in the championship game of the 2015 MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York.
No. 1 Quinnipiac earned a spot in the title game by defeating No. 9 Monmouth University 82-61 in the quarterfinals, and No. 5 Siena College 64-47 in the semifinals. Quinnipiac had a season for the record books, recording an undefeated record in conference play this season going 20-0 in MAAC play while not losing a single game at home over the course of the year. The Bobcats suffered only three loses on the season and have been receiving votes in the latest national polls.
No. 2 Marist is on their way to their 12th consecutive title game by knocking off No. 10 Saint Peter’s University 62-57 in the quarterfinal round, and No. 3 Fairfield University 67-50 in the semifinals game. Marist will be looking to win its 10th straight title and 11 of the last 12. The Red Foxes have now won 48 consecutive MAAC postseason games.
Quinnipiac swept Marist during the regular season, knocking off the Red Foxes 73-55 on Jan. 22 at home, and on Feb. 12 on the road Quinnipiac was victorious 80-62. Three players on either team have been named to the All-MAAC First Team including Marist’s Tori Jarosz and Madeline Blais, while Samantha Guastella hails from Quinnipiac. Three other Bobcats have been named to All-MAAC teams including Val Driscoll, Nikoline Ostergaard and Gillian Abshire, while Maria Napolitano was named the MAAC’s Sixth Player of the Year. Also from Marist is All-MAAC Rookie Team selection Allie Clement.
In a rematch of last season’s championship meeting, Quinnipiac and Marist will meet for the second time in the two years the Bobcats have been in the league. The last time a No. 1 seed and No. 2 seeds met in the title game was in the 2013 championship when top seed Marist defeated second seed Iona to start for their 9th consecutive conference title.
The championship game will be broadcast live nationally on Monday at 4:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
