EDISON, N.J. – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) met this past weekend on the campus of Manhattan College for its annual spring meeting. The new NCAA government substructure was one of the many topics on the agenda for the meeting, along with the new transfer eligibility rules and the state of mental health of student-athletes. Representatives from each of the 11 member institutions took part in the discussions led by the MAAC National SAAC representative, Emily Altier, a Niagara University junior swimming & diving team member.

“The SAAC representatives of the MAAC member institutions continue to go above and beyond being members of their local communities and this weekend was no different,” noted Dan Petrino, MAAC Director of Championships. “Their volunteer effort at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey was just a glimpse into the types of programs and initiatives they support throughout the year at their respective campuses and in their communities.”

Prior to the administrative meeting, which took place on Sunday, April 12, the MAAC SAAC group went on a volunteer service to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ) in Hillside, New Jersey. The student-athletes spent their Saturday morning sorting and packing donated food. The CFBNJ is a member of Feeding America which distributes food, provides education and training, develops programs to help hungry people throughout the state, and engages all sectors of society in this mission.  Each year the CFBNJ and its partners feed 900,000 hungry people, and since its incorporation in 1982 has distributed almost 500 million pounds of food.

Following their volunteer effort in New Jersey, the MAAC SAAC took in the bright lights of New York City.  The student-athletes enjoyed a night on the town with a dinner at Tony’s DiNapoli in Times Square, followed by a viewing of the critically acclaimed Broadway hit, Aladdin.
