Three MAAC Women's Basketball Players Named to All-Metropolitan Team

Edison, N.J. – Iona College senior guard Damika Matinez was named to the 2015 All-Metropolitan First Team, while Marist College senior center Tori Jarosz and Fairfield University redshirt sophomore Casey Smith were named to the 2015 All-Metropolitan Third Team.
Martinez, a 5‘7 guard from Meriden, Conn., was named the MAAC Player of the Year for the third consecutive year as well as an All-MAAC First Team selection. A 2014 AP All-American Honorable Mention and All-Met Player of the Year selection, Martinez led the MAAC in made free throws registering 119 points from the charity stripe and averaged 23.8 points per game average ranking her third in the nation. She scored 10 or more points in all 30 games, with 21 20+ point efforts, and six games with 30 or more. Martinez was named MAAC Player of the Week a league best four times in 2014-15. Additionally, Martinez was a finalist for the 2015 Nancy Lieberman Award for the second straight year, given by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to the nation’s top point guard in NCAA Division I women’s basketball. Martinez was also a mid-season watch list selection for the Dawn Staley Award. She made history in 2015 as she became the MAAC’s all-time leading scorer on February 20 after recording her 2,468th point. She is also the MAAC’s all-time career leader in three-point field goals made with 311. Martinez is also the first player in league history to win four consecutive scoring titles.
Jarosz, a 6’3 center from Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., was named to the All-MAAC First Team and earned MAAC All-Championship Team honors. Jarosz was second in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.1 points per game and was also second in the conference in rebounding with 9.5 rebounds per game. Jarosz shot 50% from the field and 70% from the free throw line during the season. Her 2.6 blocks per game led the conference and set a Marist single-season record with 71 blocks.
Smith, a 6’2 forward from Danbury, Conn., was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team and All-MAAC Third Team in 2014-15. Smith finished her first season of collegiate competition with 370 points, the most by a Fairfield first-year player since 1988. Her 11.9 points per game led the Stags and ranked her as a top 15 scorer in the conference. She shot 44 percent from the field and added 29 blocks on the season. Smith was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week six times and was selected as the ECAC Rookie of the Week three times. Smith also becomes the sixth Stag in the last seven seasons to be named to the squad chosen by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association.
