Mistretta, Hunt & Margevicius Named MAAC Weekly Award Winners
MAAC Sports
Player of the Week
Travis Mistretta, Iona
Jr., OF, 5-11, Manchester, Conn./Avon Old Farms
Junior outfielder Travis Mistretta led the Gaels to a 3-1 week with a .538 batting average with seven hits in 13 at bats. He reached base in 62.5% of his plate appearances and slugged .692 with the help of two doubles on the week. Mistretta scored five times and drove in four others. He walked twice, stole a base and was hit by a pitch in his all-around week. He also executed two sacrifice bunts where his speed helped force errors to reach base two other times. Mistretta made two spectacular plays in the field at Niagara, one with his arm and the other with his glove. In game two, his first inning throw home off a Purple Eagle double cut down a runner trying to score and helped preserve a 5-0 shutout for junior RHP Mariano Rivera. In game three he made a diving play at the line to save extra bases with graduate LHP Eddie Macaluso on the mound in the early innings of a 12-2 win.
Pitcher of the Week
T.J. Hunt, Monmouth
Sr., RHP, 6-4, Wycoff, N.J./Ramapo
T.J. Hunt threw the first no-hitter for Monmouth baseball since current Baltimore Oriole Brad Brach tossed one against Long Island in 2007. He only allowed one runner to reach second base, and recorded four 1-2-3 innings while striking out five. In the final inning, he got a ground out to short and a punch out before getting Zach Rawson to roll over one to shortstop to complete the no-hitter. Hunt has now thrown five complete games this season, and has completed every single start he has made at home this year.
Rookie of the Week
Nick Margevicius, Rider
Fr., LHP, 6-3, North Royalton, Ohio/Saint Ignatius
The freshman pitched seven shutout innings against one of the top offensive clubs in the MAAC, Quinnipiac, allowing just four singles and 2 walks while striking out seven, improving to 4-1 against MAAC teams. Has allowed just 3 earned run in his last 29 innings.
