Canisius and Fairfield set to meet in the 2015 Women's Lacrosse Final

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Top-seeded Canisius College and second-seed Fairfield University will meet in the title game of the 2015 Women’s Lacrosse Championship at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3 in Buffalo, New York at Demske Sports Complex on the campus of Canisius College. The championship final will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable and ESPN3.
The four-time defending champion Canisius, reached the final for the fifth consecutive year and sixth time overall by way of a 15-7 victory over fifth-seed Marist College in the semifinal. The Golden Griffins were led by junior attack Taylor Giglio who had five points which included four goals on four shots. Ashley Bull scored three goals, Erica Evans added two goals, while Meghan Cuddy, Caroline Ogden, Whitley Perry, Lauren Smolensky, Allie Stewart, and Tori Quinn all found the back of the net once for Canisius in the semifinal.
Fairfield advanced to its sixth ever championship final and first since the 2012 campaign after an 8-7 semifinal victory over third-seed Monmouth University. The Stags Reilly Hellstein led the charge in the semifinal with four points from a hat trick and one assists. Hellstein’s biggest goal came by way of a game-winner when the sophomore midfield found the goal with 3:38 left in the game off of an assists from Julieanne Mascera. Mascera chipped in with two goals, while Courtney Chmil, Jenna Fuchs, and Maeve Quinn all scored one goal apiece. Fairfield has previously won two MAAC titles in 2001 and 2009.
Canisius defeated Fairfield, 11-10, during the regular season on April 11 in Fairfield, Connecticut.
The winner of the 2015 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship earns the league’s automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship. The NCAA Division I selection announcement will take place on Sunday, May 3 at 9:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
