Monmouth Captures its First MAAC Overall Commissioner's Cup; Fairfield wins Women's Cup
MAAC Sports
EDISON, N.J. – The Monmouth University Hawks have claimed the 2014-15 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Overall Commissioner’s Cup. The Hawks also secured the Men’s Commissioner’s Cup for the second year in a row, while Fairfield University won the Women’s Commissioner’s Cup.
The MAAC Commissioner’s Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 25 championship athletic events conducted within the MAAC. Each institution is scored in all championships that it fields a varsity team. However, only the scores from the men’s and women’s basketball participation, plus the other top six men’s and other top six women’s championships are used to determine an institution’s total points.
In just its second year in the league, Monmouth’s performance during the season helped capture the school’s first ever Overall Commissioner’s Cup and second Men’s Commissioner’s Cup in a row. During the 2014-15 campaign, Monmouth took home MAAC championships in Field Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track and Field, and Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track and Field.
“Congratulations to Monmouth University and its student-athletes, coaches and administrators in winning their first ever MAAC Overall Commissioner’s Cup,” notes MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “When Monmouth was seeking membership into the MAAC, it was envisioned that the quality of their overall program would be strong and winning the Commissioner’s Cup reinforces the view that Monmouth has a deep and talented athletic program. Congratulations to athletic director Marilyn McNeil on her leadership and vision with the athletic program at Monmouth.”
“We are all very proud of the accomplishments of our teams that led to Monmouth winning the MAAC Overall and Men’s Commissioner's Cup,” said Dr. Marilyn McNeil, Monmouth’s Vice President and Director of Athletics. “To win the overall cup in our second year as a member institution is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes, coaches and staff members! Additionally, our male athletes are also to be commended for capturing the cup in back to back years.”
Fairfield earned its eighth overall Women’s Commissioner’s Cup crown during the academic year, its first since the 2008-09 season. The Stags won MAAC championships in Women’s Lacrosse and Softball on the way to earning 86.00 total points.
“I would like to congratulate Fairfield University and its athletic director Gene Doris on winning the MAAC Women’s Sports Commissioner’s Cup,” added Ensor. “Fairfield consistently challenges in the Cup race, last winning it in 2008-09, and the competitiveness of their program reflects the school’s commitment to excellence on the field and in the classroom.”
"Winning the Women’s Commissioner’s Cup is the result of the effort and dedication our student-athletes and coaches. It also reflects the support of our administration, faculty and support staff,” Fairfield Director of Athletics, Gene Doris said. “The Commissioner’s Cup is a benchmark of excellence because it is the culmination of the successes of many teams. I know our alumni and friends share my pride in an accomplishment that we strive to reach each year".
