Edison, N.J. – The #19/20 Marist men’s lacrosse team (14-3, 6-0 MAAC) will play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in program history when it faces off against no. 1 Syracuse at 7:30 p.m. May 10 in the Carrier Dome. The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
In front of a record crowd of 1,873 fans at Tenney Stadium, the Red Foxes defeated Bryant, 10-6, on May 6 in a preliminary round game. It was the first ever NCAA contest Marist had hosted in any sport. Freshman Gannon Morrison (Cary, N.C.) led the Marist offense with two goals and two assists while senior Dave Scarcello stopped 14 shots in goal to help the Red Foxes advance.
The Orange (12-2, 2-2 ACC) have won four straight games heading into the postseason tournament, including a final regular season tune up against no. 12 Colgate on May 2 that ended 9-7. Syracuse has an average margin of victory of 6.3 goals this season but has played in closer contests lately. The Orange inched past North Carolina 9-8 in the semifinal of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships before nipping Duke 15-14 in the final.
The winner of Sunday night’s game will advance to face either no. 7 Virginia or Johns Hopkins. That first round matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m. May 10 on ESPNU. The quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament will be held May 16 and 17 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.
