Merriam Named MAAC Director of Compliance

EDISON, N.J. - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has named Brian “BJ” Merriam Jr., as its Director of Compliance, announced by MAAC Commissioner, Richard J. Ensor.
“We are excited to have BJ join the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference staff,” notes Jessica Hegmann, MAAC Senior Associate Commissioner. “The newly formed compliance position will allow the MAAC to expand its service to the league member institutions. With the previous background, knowledge, and experience that BJ has, he will be a positive contributor to the conference.”
In his role, Merriam will serve as the conference NCAA compliance coordinator and handle all inquiries and interactions between the MAAC membership and the national office. He will oversee the National Letter of Intent Program, the administration of the NCAA Coaches Certification Exams, serve as the conference resource person for the NCAA Institutional Performance Program, and serve as the conference liaison to the MAAC Compliance and Enforcement Committee and Committee on Athletic Administration on compliance matters.
Merriam comes to the MAAC from Bucknell University, where he served as a graduate assistant for Title IX and Student Conduct. While at Bucknell, he was charged with monitoring student conduct violations and creating assessments to improve protocol. Furthermore, Merriam worked in the Athletics Compliance office for the Bison athletics where he analyzed the recruited and amateurism status of a cohort of Bison student athletes. In addition, Merriam was tasked with transitioning degree audit data on all Bucknell student athletes into a new database.
Prior to Bucknell, Merriam served as the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Susquehanna University. During his time coaching the Crusaders, the team captured back-to-back Landmark Championships and made a Sweet 16 appearance in the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships. In addition to his coaching duties, Merriam worked as an Athletics Administration Intern at Susquehanna, in which he was responsible for disseminating “The Compliance Corner” and educating fellow coaches on NCAA legislation.
Merriam earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Susquehanna University in 2011, where he was a four-year student athlete on the men’s soccer team. As a student-athlete, he guided Susquehanna to the Landmark Conference playoffs in three of his four years on the squad and aided the team in capturing the 2008 Landmark Conference Championship. Merriam earned his Master’s in College Student Personnel from Bucknell in May of 2015.
