“It’s another step and exactly what I have always worked for,” said Dowd. “I’m excited to get the chance to play and have the opportunity to keep playing lacrosse for a lot longer. My dad helped start the league so I grew up watching the MLL ever since it started. I always said that I wanted to play (in the league) so it’s pretty sweet to have a chance to do it.”
In just its second year, the MLL’s Undrafted College Player Pool provides standout collegiate players who were not take in the league’s draft back in January an opportunity to join the professional ranks. Dowd was one of 14 players that were drafted through the player pool.
Dowd ranked fifth nationally in groundballs per game (8.07) this spring in wrapping up one of the most productive careers at the faceoff X in NCAA history. He currently stands tied for fifth all-time in NCAA Division I history in groundballs (472) and sixth in faceoffs won (772).
Dowd appeared in 62 career games manning the faceoff X for the Saints and helped guide the program to the 2014 MAAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance as well as a pair of regular season titles (2012, 2014). Dowd was named the MAAC Faceoff Specialist of the Year during the Saints’ title run his junior season in which he broke his own program and MAAC record with 151 groundballs which was the 15th highest single-season total in NCAA Division I history.
Dowd becomes the third student athlete in Siena Lacrosse history to join the Major League Lacrosse ranks. Brent Herbst ’10 was selected 22nd overall in the 2010 collegiate draft by the Long Island Lizards and Bryan Neufeld ’12 was chosen with the 28th pick in the fourth round of the 2013 supplemental draft by Rochester.
Dowd will likely be placed on the Rattlers’ active roster or practice squad by Monday at noon. Rochester’s season began back in April and the team’s next game is Sunday when the Rattlers host the Boston Cannons at 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
