MAAC Volleyball Set to Start on Friday

EDISON, NJ – The first weekend of volleyball is set to start on Friday, August 28 with nine of the ten Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schools slated to see its first action of the 2015 campaign.
Defending champion and 2015 preseason favorite, Siena College, will be the first MAAC school to step onto the court as they travel to Georgia Tech to take on the Yellow Jackets in the opening match of the Georgia Tech Tournament at 9:30 a.m. The action continues on Friday when Rider faces UMass Lowell in the Maroon and Grey Tournament and Manhattan competes in the Towson Invitational against Saint Francis University at 10:00 a.m. The morning games wrap up with Canisius facing host school Morehead State in the Morehead State Tournament at 11:00 a.m.
Marist, led by 2015 Co-Preseason Players of the Year Amanda Schlegel and Courtney Shaw head to Beaumont, Texas to face Alabama-Birmingham in the Lamar Invitational at 2 p.m. Quinnipiac travels to Smithfield, Rhode Island to face host school Bryant in the Bryant Tournament at 2:00 p.m. Rider competes in its second match of the Maroon and Grey Tournament when they face Maryland Eastern Shore at 2:00 p.m. Manhattan and Marist also have another match scheduled on the day when the Jaspers take on Coppin State at 2:30 p.m. in the Towson Invitational and the Red Foxes face Texas Southern at 5:00 p.m. in the Lamar Invitational.
The late afternoon contests begin at 4:00 p.m. with Iona facing Holy Cross in the Bryant Tournament and Fairfield taking on Central Connecticut State in the CCSU Blue Devil Classic. Canisius resumes action in the Morehead State Tournament when they face Indiana State at 4:30 p.m. Day one of the 2015 MAAC volleyball season concludes with Siena and The Citadel at 5:00 p.m. in the Georgia Tech Tournament and Niagara and Wright State at 7:30 p.m. in the nightcap of the Wright State Tournament.
The schedule continues on Saturday, August 29 with 15 games of MAAC volleyball slated. The day starts off with Siena and Coastal Carolina at 9:30 a.m. in the Georgia Tech Tournament. Three contests start at 10:00 a.m. with Iona and Quinnipiac in the Bryant Tournament, Rider and UMass Lowell in the Maroon and Grey Tournament, and Niagara facing Evansville in the Wright State Invitational. Canisius faces Marshall in the Morehead State Tournament at noon. At 12:15 p.m., Manhattan faces host school Towson as the Towson Invitational continues. Quinnipiac faces Holy Cross at 12:30 p.m. in the Bryant Tournament. In the CCSU Blue Devil Tournament, Fairfield and the New Jersey Institute of Technology compete at 1:30 p.m. Rider and Maryland Eastern Shore face one another at 2:00 p.m. in the Maroon and Grey Tournament. Marist takes on host school Lamar in the Lamar Invitational at 2 p.m.
Saturday’s slate of games concludes with Niagara facing Tennessee Tech at 3:30 p.m. in the Wright State Invitational. At 4:00 p.m., Iona faces host Bryant in the Bryant Tournament and Fairfield versus Bucknell in the CCSU Blue Devil Classic, followed by Manhattan taking on Delaware State at 4:45 p.m. in the Towson Invitational. The last matchup of the day will see Siena and UT Martin hit the court at 5:00 p.m. for the Georgia Tech Tournament.
Opening weekend concludes on Sunday, August 30when Canisius faces Loyola University Maryland in the Robert Morris Tournament at 2:00 p.m.
Saint Peter’s University is the lone MAAC school not competing on opening weekend. The Peacocks kick off the its 2015 campaign on September 4when they face Lehigh University at 4:00 p.m.
The 2015 volleyball first installment of weekly awards will be announced on Tuesday, September 1. The league will select a player, libero, and rookie of the week until the MAAC Championship.
The season will culminate with the 2015 MAAC Volleyball Championship, which will be hosted by Siena College in Loundonville, NY from November 20-22, 2015.
