Offensive Player of the Week
Carlie Spaeder, Rider
Jr., F, 5-2, Newton Square, PA/Cardinal O’Hara
Carlie Spaeder scored twice in the opening week of the season, including the game-winning goal with 16 seconds left in Rider’s 1-0 win at Georgetown on August 30. This was her ninth career goal and third game-winner. Spaeder also scored Rider’s final goal in a 3-0 win over Lehigh on August 28. She had a four-point week and played 138 of 140 minutes.
Defensive Player of the Week
Mary Altepeter, Sacred Heart
Sr., GK, 5-9, Chesterfield, MO/Visitation Academy
With a 16-save performance in Sacred Heart’s season opener on Friday, Mary Altepeter helped the Pioneers down Big East-member Villanova 1-0 in double-overtime for their second straight season-opening overtime win. In the first half she had seven of her saves putting the senior just shy one more save of a career-high. Altepeter preserved the 0-0 tie with 59th and 64th minutes before saving the final shot of regulation with less than two minutes remaining. Villanova earned a corner with under 20 seconds remaining in overtime, the Wildcats got a shot off with zero seconds showing on the clock. Altepeter came up large once again to force the second overtime period. Throughout the two games this weekend, the goalkeeper made 23 saves as the Pioneers went 1-1. She will head into the second weekend of play boasting a .920 save percentage.
Rookie of the Week
Ariane Von Schenck, Fairfield
Fr., D, 5-7, Frankfurt, Germany/Lessing Gymnasium
Ariane Von Schenck made her first career start for the Stags in their season opening victory against Colgate. Von Schenck had a tremendous performance recording one goal and two assists. Both assists were centering passes that found the stick of forward Ann Burgoyne. Her first collegiate goal came right before halftime when she was able to collect a rebound and put it right back to give Fairfield a 3-0 lead.
