Fairfield Duo of Day & Bechtold Named Player, Libero of the Week; Fergus Wins Third Straight Rookie Honor

Player of the Week

Skyler Day, Fairfield

Jr., OH, Minooka, IL/ Minooka Community High School / University at Buffalo

Skyler Day led the Stags to a 3-0 week of MAAC action with a trio of strong performances on the outside. She averaged 5.00 kills per set on .294 hitting for the week in wins over Marist, Niagara and Canisius that cemented Fairfield as the last remaining team unbeaten in MAAC play at 7-0. Day helped the cause defensively with 2.33 digs per set and two blocks and also served up three aces. In Wednesday’s four-set win at Marist, Day sent home 18 kills (.207 and landed just shy of a double-double with nine digs. Against Niagara on Saturday, she hammered 19 kills – the most by a Stag in a three-set match since 2013 – on .412 hitting with seven digs, two blocks and two aces. Day rounded out the week playing just two sets in the Sunday sweep of Canisius, compiling eight kills on .353 hitting with five digs.

Libero of the Week

Mallory Bechtold, Fairfield

Mallory Bechtold helmed the back row in three Fairfield victories this past week. She averaged 5.50 digs per set in the libero spot and aided the offense with 1.10 assists per frame. Bechtold also chipped in to the scoring effort with four service aces. Her week was highlighted by a near double-double as she totaled 15 digs and a career-high eight assists in the Saturday sweep of Niagara. Bechtold also notched 21 digs in a four-set win at Marist and 19 digs in a 3-0 triumph over Canisius.

Rookie of the Week

Megan Fergus, Marist

Fr., MB/OH, Millbrook, NY/Millbrook

Fergus dominated in the front row in three matches for Marist, averaging 3.73 kills and 0.82 blocks per set. She slammed a career-high 20 kills against Fairfield on Sept. 28. In a four-set victory at Iona, Fergus contributed eight kills and a match-high five blocks. The following day at Manhattan, she had a hand in 15 points with 13 kills and four blocks as the Red Foxes took down the Jaspers in straight sets. Fergus compiled a .322 attack percentage for the week.
