Monmouth University Named 2017 Indoor Track & Field Favorites
EDISON, NJ –Three-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champions Monmouth University has been selected as the preseason favorite to repeat as the 2017 Men's Indoor Track & Field Champions, according to a vote of the league’s eight head coaches. Monmouth University earned a total of 63 points with seven first place votes.
Last season, the Hawks won the 60 meter hurdles, 60 meter dash, 800 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 4x400 meter relay, and the shotput. Hawks sophomore Bryan Sosoo set a new MAAC record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.71 seconds. Monmouth University finished with 170 team points.
Finishing in second place and receiving one first place vote is Manhattan College totaling 54 points. Rider University finished third place with 43 points and Iona College finished in fourth place with 42 points. Saint Peter’s University finished fifth in the poll with 29 points. Marist College finished in sixth place with 23 points. Canisius College finished in seventh with 20 points. Siena College placed eighth with 14 points.
Three-time defending MAAC Champions Monmouth University has also been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2017 MAAC Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship according to a vote of the league’s nine head coaches. Monmouth University received a total of 79 points with seven first place votes. Last season, the Hawks claimed its third consecutive MAAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship.
At the 2016 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championship, Monmouth University won four events including the 60 meter dash, 800 meter run, distance medley, and the 4 x 400 meter. The Hawks set a new distance medley MAAC record with a time of 11:44.68 led by juniors Lindsey Bellaran, Jenna Cupp, Vanessa Dautruche and senior Kendal Hand. Bellaran, Cupp, and Hand continued their dominance in the 800 meter run by sweeping the top three spots. The Hawks finished with 205 team points.
Finishing in second place and receiving one first place vote is Quinnipiac University with 69 points. Third place and also receiving one first place vote belongs to Manhattan College who finished with a total of 62 points. Rider University came in fourth with 56 points. Iona College finished fifth with 46 points. Saint Peter’s placed sixth with 32 points. Marist College finished seventh with 29 points and Siena College placed eighth with 18 points. Canisius College rounded out the poll in ninth with 14 points.
