NEW YORK (Dec. 20, 2016) --- Alexis Lewis of Iona in Division I, and Sierra Clark of Adelphi and Kristen Drogsler of Caldwell as co-winners in Divisions II-III, have been named Women’s Players of the Week, respectively, by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Dec. 12-18, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
A 5-10 sophomore guard from Pittston, PA, Lewis tied an Iona women’s basketball single-game record with seven made 3-point field goals in helping the Gaels (6-4) in their only game last week capture a 62-46 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn.
Lewis finished the game with 25 points, one shy of her career-high that came earlier this season against Manhattan. She shot 7-of-10 from long range while grabbing four rebounds and four steals in just 23 minutes of playing time.
A 5-10 senior forward from Hughesville, MD, Clark led all scorers with 27 points for the Panthers (9-2) in a 63-58 victory over regional rival Bloomfield. She scored 17 of her team’s 31 first-half points and pulled down 11 rebounds overall for her ninth double-double of the season in Adelphi’s only game of the week.
A 5-10 junior guard from Middle Village, NY, Drogsler averaged 24.5 points, 12 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals in a 1-1 week for the Cougars (10-2).
She shot 7-of-14 from downtown and posted her first double-double of the season with 27 points and 13 rebounds --- along with eight assists, two blocks and four steals --- in a 79-73 loss to Malone. Drogsler followed with another double-double in a 67-55 triumph over Southern Connecticut State, totaling 22 points and 11 rebounds.
The Met Basketball Writers Players of the Week program will now take a two-week holiday break and renew its weekly announcements on Jan. 10.
