This Week in MAAC Sports; February 1

EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) heads into the final month of the regular season for basketball while baseball, softball and lacrosse all begin this month. The 2016 MAAC Swimming & Diving Championship takes place next week. The 2016 MAAC Basketball Championship is right around the corner.

In men’s basketball news, Monmouth University is in first place in the standings with a 9-2 MAAC record. The Hawks rank 38th in the NCAA in RPI and received eight votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Siena Saints and Iona Gaels are tied in second place in the conference with 8-3 records. MAAC Player of the Week Brett Bisping recorded two double-doubles for the Saints while averaging 23.5 points and 15 rebounds. The Saints welcome the Hawks to the Times Union Center on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. tip-off. Here is the rest of the men’s basketball schedule for this week:

·         Marist versus Siena on Sunday, February 7 at noon

·         Niagara versus Iona on Sunday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m.

·         Canisius versus Rider on Sunday, February 7 at 3:00 p.m. on ESPNU

·         Fairfield versus Manhattan on Sunday, February 7 at 3:30 p.m.

In women’s basketball news, Marist is atop of the MAAC standings with a 10-2 record and currently is on a seven game winning streak. Tori Jarosz won her third MAAC Player of the Week award for the Red Foxes and is the NCAA leader in double-doubles with 17. Quinnipiac is also on a seven game winning streak after losing its first three conference games. This week’s schedule includes:

The MAAC Swimming and Diving regular season has come to a close. The 2016 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championship takes place from February 10-13 at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY. All information regarding the championship can be found here.

Manhattan College kicks off the 2016 MAAC lacrosse season when they take on Bryant on Saturday, February 6 at 1:00 p.m. in Smithfield, RI.

On the track this week, Canisius competes in the Youngstown Invitational on Friday, February 5- Saturday, February 6. Iona, Manhattan, Marist and Saint Peter’s all compete in the Metropolitan Championship on Thursday and Friday, February 4-5. Iona is also competing with Monmouth in the Armory Track Invitational on Friday, February 5 and the Villanova Invitational on Saturday, February 6. Quinnipiac competes in the Giegengack Invitational on Friday and Saturday, February 5-6.  Rider competes in the TCNJ Dual Meet on Friday, February 5.
