Monmouth Men Win Third Straight MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championship
The Monmouth University Men’s Indoor Track & Field team earned their third straight MAAC Championship at the 2016 Indoor Track & Field Championship, held at New Balance Armory Track & Field Center in New York, NY.
The Hawks finished in first place with 170 total points. Coming in second, is Manhattan College with 126 points, followed by Rider University finishing in third with 96 points. Iona College finished in fourth place with 85 points, while Saint Peter’s was right behind them in fifth place with 83 points. Marist College finished in sixth with 34 points, while Canisius finished seventh with 18 points. Rounding out the Men’s side in eighth place is Siena College, who finished with 12 points.
Bryan Sosoo of Monmouth University broke the MAAC record for the 60 meter dash, with a time of 6.71.
Gilbert Kirui of Iona College earned Most Outstanding Track Performer of the 2016 season. He broke the MAAC record for the 5,000 meter race with a time of 14:21.31 and also won the 3,000 meter event with a time of 8:17.37. Blerim Pocesta of Manhattan College earned Most Outstanding Field Performer of the 2016 season. Pocesta won the weight throw event with a throw of 20.83 meters and finished third in the shot put with a throw of 15.82 meters.
Joe Compagni of Monmouth University was named the 2016 Men’s Coach of the Year.
