EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) spring sports are in full swing. There is playoff basketball while some teams just wrapped up their seasons on the court.
In men’s basketball news, Monmouth faces George Washington in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament tonight at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN. The Hawks defeated Bucknell in the first round. Iona battled with #4 Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. A.J. English scored 28 points and his 2,000th career point in the loss. Jordan Washington scored 26 points and added 12 rebounds to record a double-double. Fairfield and Siena competed in the College Insider.com Tournament and College Basketball Invitational, respectively.
In women’s basketball news, Quinnipiac defeated Maine in first-round WNIT action and would compete with Temple in second-round action before falling 64-62. The MAAC Women’s Basketball Regular Season Champions earned its first national postseason win in program history. Iona travelled to College Park, Maryland to take on #2 Maryland in the NCAA Tournament. The Gaels competed with the Terrapins before losing 78-54. Fairfield traveled to Baltimore, Maryland and faced UMBC in the 2016 Women’s Basketball Invitational.
Conference play begins this weekend for baseball. Monmouth is currently in first place with a 7-11 overall record. The Hawks defeated #17 East Carolina over the weekend. Marist stands at first place in the MAAC softball standings with a 13-6 overall record. Conference play begins on April 2. This past weekend, Manhattan defeated Fairleigh Dickinson 11-2 in the St. John’s Tournament, Iona defeated Santa Clara 10-4 in the Santa Clara Tournament and Marist knocked off Hartford, 4-1.
