King Rice Named ECAC Coach of the Year, Justin Robinson & A.J. English Tabbed All-ECAC First Team Selections

DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its 2016 Division I Men’s Basketball All-ECAC selections and major award winners. 

Jameel Warney from Stony Brook University was voted as the 2016 ECAC Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, while Dartmouth College forward Evan Boudreaux was tabbed as the Rookie of the Year. King Rice of Monmouth University earned Coach of the Year honors to round out the Division I men’s basketball major awards.

Coach of the Year

King Rice – Monmouth University (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference)

In his fifth year at the helm of Monmouth University, Rice guided his team to the MAAC regular season title with a 17-3 MAAC mark and a program record 25 overall wins. Under his direction, the Hawks recorded wins over five teams from power-five conferences, including UCLA and USC, Notre Dame and Georgetown, with the win over Notre Dame giving Monmouth its first win over a national-ranked team in program history. Rice also oversaw a team that claimed two major conference awards and placed four student-athletes on all-MAAC teams in 2015-16. 

Robinson, a 5-foot-8, junior guard from Lake Katrine, New York, makes the All-MAAC First Team for the second year in a row after leading Monmouth to its first ever MAAC regular season title and a program record 25 wins. He is currently ranked third in the conference with his 20.2 points per game average and seventh in assists with a 3.7 average. Robinson’s 2.1 steals per contest leads the league and his 1.7 assists to turnover ratio is good for sixth. He won MAAC Player of the Week three times during his junior campaign.

English, a 6-foot-4, senior guard from Wilmington, Delaware, was named unanimously to the All-MAAC First Team for the second straight year and makes the team for the third consecutive season overall. He leads the MAAC in scoring averaging 22.3 points, and leads the league in assists, averaging 6.1 per game. English also leads the conference with 3.3 made three-point field goals per contest and ranks sixth with his 84 percent free throw percentage. The unanimous Preseason Player of the Year was named MAAC Player of the Week three times this season.
