EDISON, NJ – Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) spring sports are in full effect as the month of March comes to a close.
Basketball season officially came to an end last week when Monmouth fell to George Washington in the second round of the NIT. It was another great season for the MAAC on the basketball court. Our institutions made national headlines and had teams compete in the NCAA tournament, NIT, CIT, CBI and WBI.
On the baseball diamond, Canisius swept Saint Peter’s to start conference play. In game two of the three game set J.P. Stevenson tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout over Saint Peter’s, striking out eight and scattering six hits. Monmouth opened up conference play with a sweep of Rider. Reigning MAAC Pitcher of the Week Ricky Dennis had a complete-game seven inning performance against the Broncs, striking out five while only allowing four hits. Siena’s Kyano Cummings also tossed a seven-inning complete-game shutout in the second game of the Saints double-header with Niagara. Cummings only gave up two hits and while striking out four.

Softball begins conference play this week, starting on Saturday, April 2. Marist is currently in first place with a 17-7 record. The Red Foxes are on a four-game winning streak after sweeping Bethune-Cookman and Stetson last week.

The outdoor track and field season started last week. Monmouth and Manhattan swept the weekly awards. Monmouth’s Ahmier Dupree and Manhattan’s Kathy Cadet were named men’s and women’s track performers of the week, respectively. In water polo news, Wagner College currently leads the MAAC with a 16-9 record. The Seahawks notched its first conference win, defeating Villanova 14-4. St. Francis Brooklyn picked up its first MAAC win of the season with an 11-8 win over Siena.
