Regular Season Champion Quinnipiac University Advances to Semifinals of 2016 MAAC Women's Basketball Championship

ALBANY, NY – The first quarterfinal matchup of the 2016 MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship saw the MAAC Women’s Basketball Regular Season Champion and top seeded, Quinnipiac University Bobcats, defeat ninth seeded Niagara 74-51 at the Times Union Center.

The Bobcats were led by Sarah Shewan who scored 24 points in the win on 10-for-13 shooting from the field. All-MAAC Rookie Team member Paula Strautmane scored 18 points on eight-for-13 shooting. She added four rebounds and two assists. Adily Martucci added seven points and four rebounds for the Bobcats.

For the Purple Eagles, Tiffany Corselli, a day after tying the second-place record in MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship history with six made three-pointers, score 19 points in the defeat. Corselli connected on five of 10 shots from long distance in this quarterfinals contest. Her fourth three-pointer brought the Purple Eagles within six of the Bobcats at the 1:56 mark of the third quarter. Taylor McKay chipped in 13 points for Niagara University.

Quinnipiac University now moves onto the MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship semifinal to take on the winner of fourth seeded Fairfield University and fifth seeded Monmouth University, which takes place on Saturday, March 5 at 2:30 p.m. Quinnipiac’s semifinal matchup against either the Stags or Hawks will be on Sunday, March 6 at 11:00 a.m. on ESPN3.

The 2016 MAAC Women’s Championship title game will take place on Monday, March 7 at 2:30 p.m. and will air live on ESPNU with the winner earning the leagues automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
