Wagner College Claims Top Seed in Upcoming MAAC Water Polo Championship

EDISON, NJ – The Wagner College Seahawks finished the 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with a perfect 12-0 conference record to be crowned regular season champions. The Seahawks will be the number one seed in the upcoming championship and will take on fourth seeded Villanova University. Senior center Jess Lundgren broke the MAAC record for most goals in a single season with 137, surpassing the previous record held by Maggie Wood of Iona, who scored 119 goals in 2011. Lundgren finished first in the MAAC with 196 points, 116 steals and third with 59 assists. Wagner College finished 27-9 overall, setting a school record for most wins in a season.
The Seahawks take on the Villanova Wildcats in the first semifinal match of the championship on Saturday, April 30 at noon. Villanova finished the regular season with an even 6-6 record in conference play and a 16-16 overall record. Juile Conrath ranked fourth in conference with 106 saves and fifth with an 8.92 goals against average.
Wagner College has won the championship five times in school history, and is the two-time defending MAAC Water Polo Champions.
Marist College finished the regular season with a 9-3 MAAC and a 15-17 overall record to earn the second seed in the championship. The Red Foxes will face third seeded Iona College, who went 8-4 in MAAC play and 12-14 overall. During the regular season, the Red Foxes swept the series over the Gaels. Amanda Amorosa led the Red Foxes with 46 goals this season, finishing ninth overall in the MAAC. For the Gaels, Britten Vilander finished third in the MAAC with a .453 save percentage. Jordin Hale ranked ninth in the MAAC with 40 saves.
Marist College and Iona College meet at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 in the second semifinal matchup. The winners of the two semifinals matches will meet on Sunday, May 1 at 2:00 p.m. in the championship game. The third place game will take place on Sunday, May 1 at noon.
