EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women’s lacrosse championship begins this weekend with first round action on Saturday, April 30. Men’s lacrosse enters the final week of the regular season with the championship taking place next weekend.

For the second straight year, Canisius College claimed the MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Regular Season Championship. The Griffs will host the championship and have earned a first-round bye. Canisius swept this week’s weekly awards. Lauren Smolensky was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring four goals to go along with seven assists. Erica Evans took home MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors with five caused turnovers, six draw controls and five groundballs to go along with 12 goals and two assists. Jourdan Roemer scored four goals and handed out seven assists to win MAAC Rookie of the Week accolades.

Marist College, Monmouth University, Niagara University, Iona College and Fairfield University all have earn spots in the championship. The two through sixth seeds are still yet to be determined. Semifinals action takes place on Friday, May 6 with the championship final taking place on Sunday, May 8. Following the conclusion of the regular season on Wednesday, April 27, all seeding will be finalized. The schedule for the final week of the regular season includes:

·         Monmouth versus Iona on Wednesday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m. on ESPN3

·         Manhattan versus Fairfield on Wednesday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m.

·         Siena versus Marist on Wednesday, April 27 at 4:00 p.m.

·         Niagara versus Canisius on Wednesday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m.

In men’s lacrosse news, Quinnipiac University won the 2016 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Regular Season Championship with an 8-5 win over Monmouth University. The Bobcats will host the MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship as the number one overall seed. Quinnipiac goalkeeper Jack Brust won MAAC Defensive Player of the Week with a strong performance in the net against Monmouth. Siena’s Chris Robertson scored five goals and added three assists to win MAAC Offensive Player of the Week. Thomas Rago of Marist College scored his first career hat trick to win Rookie of the Week accolades.

Semifinal action begins on Thursday, May 5 with the championship game taking place on Saturday, May 7. Marist College has clinched a spot in the championship. Canisius College, Monmouth University, University of Detroit Mercy and Siena College are all in the running to earn a spot in the championship. Seeding will be determined after the regular season concludes on Saturday, April 30. The final games of the regular season include:

·         Siena at Albany on Tuesday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m.

·         Quinnipiac versus Manhattan on Saturday, April 30 at 12:00 p.m.

·         Siena versus Monmouth on Saturday, April 30 at 1:00 p.m.

·         Detroit versus Marist on Saturday, April 30 at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN3
