HAMDEN, CT - The Quinnipiac University women's golf team has been selected to compete in the Bryan Regional at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas for the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats clinched the automatic bid after winning the 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship on April 24. It will be the Bobcats' first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history after the sport was added at Quinnipiac in 2010. The 2016 season also marked the third season of competition in the MAAC.
In winning the conference championship, the Bobcats did so in record-breaking fashion. Quinnipiac posted a combined 933 (+69) at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course in Orlando, Florida to break the year-old record set by Albany (937) at last season's conference tournament. Freshman Luciana Tobia (La Paz, Bolivia) won medalist honors with the best round in Quinnipiac's postseason history to win Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year accolades. Tobia was named to the All-MAAC team, along with classmate Julia Kemmling (Berlin, Connecticut) and Taylor Lambrou (Baldwin, New York), who also finished in the Top 10. Head coach John O'Connor was honored with the Coach of the Year Award, his second of his career.
UCLA earned the top seed in the Bryan Regional, followed by Georgia, Arizona, Kent State, Furman, Texas A&M, Texas Christian, Texas, Southern Methodist, Louisville, Miami (Fla.), Tulane, Campbell, Indiana, Texas State, Delaware and Lamar. Quinnipiac received the No. 18 seed. Six teams and three of the six golfers competing as individuals will advance to the NCAA Championship on May 20-25 in Eugene, Oregon.
