Monmouth University & Quinnipiac University to Meet in the Men’s Tennis Championship Finals
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Monmouth University and Quinnipiac University will meet in the finals of the 2016 MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship after winning their semifinal matches against Fairfield University and Marist College, respectively.
The first-seeded Monmouth Hawks defeated fourth-seeded Fairfield University, 4-0. Monmouth took the doubles point after winning the second and third doubles. Fairfield’s number one doubles pairing of Brad Orban and Ofir Solomon were able to defeat Monmouth’s Przemyslaw Filipek and Nicola Pipoli, 6-1, but Monmouth was able to win the remaining doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The All-MAAC Second Team duo of Vidit Vaghela and Alejandro Gomez beat Fairfield’s pairing of Jeffrey Rodgers and Anthony Caputo, 6-3 from the number two doubles spot. The third doubles match was determined by a tie-breaker match, with Monmouth’s Christian Vieira and Alberto Giuffrida defeating Fairfield’s Dylan Appel and Luke Lemieux, 7-4. In singles action, All-MAAC first team member Przemylsaw Filipek was able to take down Fairfield’s Ofir Solomon in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. All-MAAC Co-Rookie of the year, Nicola Pipoli, defeated Fairfield’s Jeffrey Rodgers in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Finally, Monmouth’s Alejandro Gomez took down Fairfield’s Dylan Appel, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Second-seeded Quinnipiac defeated third-seeded Marist, 4-1, to advance to the men’s championship final. The Bobcat’s number one doubles pairing of Jonas Kuwert and Freddie Zaretsky defeated Marist’s Justin Chanthalangsy and Jan Dernic, 6-1; while Luke Roser and Kei Ezaka also beat Marist’s pairing of Rudolf Kurz and Dylan Fletcher, 7-5, to secure the doubles point. In singles play, Quinnipiac’s Jonas Kuwert defeated Marist’s Timo Tanzer in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. In number three singles action, the Bobcat’s Julian Rozenstein defeated Marist’s Fredrik Bjerke, 6-1, 2-6, and 6-3. Finally, the MAAC Men’s Player of the Year, Quinnipiac’s Kei Ezaka, defeated Marist’s Rudolf Kurz in first singles in exciting fashion, 1-6, 7-6 (1), and 6-2.
The men's championship match will begin at 10am tomorrow at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, NJ.
