Quinnipiac University & Marist College Headed to the 2016 MAAC Women’s Tennis Championship Finals
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. –Quinnipiac University will meet Marist College in the finals of the 2016 MAAC Women’s Tennis Championship after winning their semifinal matches against Niagara University and Marist College, respectively.
The defending MAAC Champions Quinnipiac University defeated fourth-seeded Niagara, 4-0. Quinnipiac took the doubles point when the No. 1 All-MAAC First Team duo of Rachel Horton and Sydney Young defeated the Niagara pairing of Haley Hollins and Sydnee Wheeler, 6-2. The Bobcat’s Jennifer Lu and Proyfon Lohaphaisan also defeated Niagara’s duo of Shannon Wong and LeAnn Richert, 6-0. In singles action, All-MAAC first team member Proyfon Lohaphaisan of Quinnipiac defeated LeAnn Richert of Niagara in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Quinnipiac’s All-MAAC Second Team member Jennifer Lu defeated Niagara’s Shannon Wong also in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. All-MAAC First Team member Sitilia Rencheli earned the final singles point for Quinnipiac, beating Niagara’s Sydnee Wheeler in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Quinnipiac looks to defend their MAAC title tomorrow in the finals slated to begin at 2:00pm.
Third-seeded Marist College defeated second-seeded Siena College, 4-0, to advance to the championship final. The Red Foxes claimed the doubles point with the Red Foxes’ number one pairing of Karly Pang and Chloe Lant defeating Siena’s Ali Garrity and Mitsuki Fukamachi, 7-6 (7-5). The Red Foxes’ number two doubles pairing of the MAAC’s Rookie of the Year Caroline Lozo and Ariel Shuman also defeated Siena’s Allysa Singh and Natalie Weaver, 6-4. In singles play, Marist’s Karly Pang defeated Siena’s Ali Garrity in number one singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Marist’s All-MAAC Second Team member Chloe Lant beat Siena’s Mitsuki Fukamachi in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. In sixth singles action, the Red Foxes’ Lizzie Brozovich defeated Siena’s Julia Dunbar 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets. Finally, Marist’s Claire Schmitz took down Siena’s Natalie Weaver from the fifth singles position, 6-2, 7-5.
The women's championship match will begin at 2:00pm tomorrow at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, NJ.
