Wagner and Marist to Meet in 2016 MAAC Water Polo Championship Final

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The top seeded Wagner College and the second seeded Marist College are set to meet each other in the 2016 MAAC Water Polo Championship tomorrow afternoon at 2PM at McCann Natatorium in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Seahawks and the Red Foxes are meeting for the third consecutive year in the MAAC Water Polo Championship final, with Wagener victorious each time.
The two teams met twice during the regular season. The Seahawks were victorious during both matches, 11-9 and 9-8.
Wagner in making its 11th appearance in the championship final. Unanimous MAAC Offensive Player of the Year and All-MAAC First Team selection, Jess Lundgren is the back bone and driving factor to the Seahawks successful season. Lundgren is currently the MAAC record holder for most goals in one season, with 142. In addition to Lundgren, Wagner is powered by two more All-MAAC First Team Selections, Lily Doerfler and Megan Rodriguez.
Tomorrow’s game will be Marist’s eighth appearance in the MAAC Water Polo Championship game since 2006. The Red Foxes are powered by All-MAAC First Team Selection Amanda Amorosa, who ranks in the top 10 in goal amongst MAAC players. Helping Amorosa is Rookie of the Year and All-MAAC Second Team Selection Katie Tijerina, who had a hat trick in Marist’s victory over Iona in the semifinal game.
The Seahawks have the opportunity to win its third consecutive title and join Marist (2008-2010) and Iona (2011-2013) as the only programs to three-peat in MAAC water polo. Marist will be looking to win its fifth MAAC crown.
Tomorrow’s consolation match will be played between the number three Villanova Wildcats and the number three Iona Gaels at noon. Both games are set to air on MAAC.TV.
The winner of the MAAC Water Polo Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Water Polo Championship. The selection show will take place on Monday May 2.
