Monmouth University Crowned 2016 MAAC Men’s Tennis Champions

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Monmouth University won their first MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship on Sunday, May 1, defeating the Quinnipiac Bobcats by a score of 4-3. 

In doubles, Quinnipiac was able to earn the point, but Monmouth would earn four straight singles points before claiming their MAAC Championship title.  Monmouth’s Alberto Giuffrida started the victories off for the Hawks, defeating Quinnipiac’s Ryoma Haraguchi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.  In second singles action, All-MAAC First Team member Przemyslaw Filipek of the Hawks defeated Quinnipiac’s Freddie Zaretsky, 7-6(4-2), 7-6(6-4).  The 2016 MAAC Men’s Tennis Most Outstanding Performer, Vidit Vaghela of Monmouth University, went on to beat Quinnipiac’s Kei Ezaka in first singles, 5-7, 6-4, 6-0.  The final match of the day between Monmouth’s Christian Vieira and Quinnipiac’s Luke Roser ended in exciting fashion, propelling the Hawks to victory.  Vieira defeated Roser 6-2 in the first set, while Roser came out on top in the second set, 6-1.  The final set was won by a tiebreaker, with Monmouth’s Vieira ultimately defeating Quinnipiac’s Roser, 11-9. 

Monmouth University will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The NCAA Men’s Tennis Selection Show will be aired live on ncaa.com on Tuesday, May 3 at 5:30 p.m.
