Quinnipiac University Wins Third Straight MAAC Women’s Tennis Championship
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. –Quinnipiac University won their third straight MAAC Women’s Tennis Championship, defeating Marist College in exciting fashion, 4-3. With this victory, Quinnipiac now posts a 29-0 record in conference play.
The two-time defending MAAC Champions, Quinnipiac University, were able to get ahead quickly, as they secured the doubles point by winning both the third and first doubles matches. The All-MAAC First Team duo of Quinnipiac’s Jennifer Lu and Proyfon Lohaphaisan defeated Marist’s Melissa Carlay and Lisa Ventimiglia, 6-0. In addition, the other Quinnipiac All-MAAC First Team pairing of Rachel Horton and Sydney Young were able to take down Marist’s Karly Pang and Chloe Lant, 6-4. In singles action, Quinnipiac’s Proyfon Lohaphaisan started off the winning for the Bobcats, as she defeated Marist’s Lizzie Brozovich in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. Quinnipiac’s All-MAAC First Team member Sydney Young battled with Marist’s Claire Schmitz to three sets, and was able to come out on top, winning 6-2, 5-7, 6-0. The number one singles match between the MAAC’s Player of the Year, Sophia Dzulynsky and Marist’s Karly Pang was a hard fought battle between both players, with Quinnipiac eventually finishing on top. In the first set, Dzulynsky defeated Pang 6-2, however Pang caused a third set with a 6-4 victory in the second set. In the final set, Quinnipiac’s Dzulynsky was able to defeat Karly Pang, 6-3.
Quinnipiac receives the conference's automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship. The NCAA Selection Show is set to air on ncaa.com on Tuesday, May 3 at 5:30 p.m.
