Player of the Week
Dan Swain, Siena
Jr., OF, 6-0, Newton, MA/Newton North
Swain hit an even .500 with six RBI and five runs scored in leading the Saints to their fifth consecutive conference series victory. The junior centerfielder went 7-14 at the dish over the weekend against Saint Peter’s and also walked twice in recording a .562 on-base percentage, .714 slugging percentage and a sweltering 1.276 OPS. In the series opener Saturday, he reached base safely five times in collecting three hits while also scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs. In the decisive rubber game Sunday, Swain produced four hits, four RBI and scored three times in finishing just a home run shy of a cycle.
Pitcher of the Week
Tom Cosgrove, Manhattan
So., LHP, 6-2, Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell
Cosgrove was dominant in registering his first career complete game victory against Niagara. Struck out nine while scattering just one unearned run and not yielding a walk over 9.0 innings of five-hit ball. Trailing 1-0 with one out and runners at the corners in the top of the second, Cosgrove got the lead runner at home to evade further damage. From that point on, Cosgrove retired 21 of the next 22 batters he faced, including 14-straight at one point, highlighted by striking out the side in the eighth. The Staten Island native allowed a pair of back-to-back one-out singles in the ninth only to hunker down and induce a game-ending double play grounder. On the year, Cosgrove, who limited Niagara to a paltry .161 average, is 2-5 with a team-best 63 strikeouts, a team-low matching 3.63 ERA over a team-high matching 72.0 innings of work.
Rookie of the Week
Tommy Miller, Siena
Fr., LHP, 6-3, Castleton, NY/Maple Hill
The freshman southpaw once again outpitched a veteran MAAC ace as Miller tossed a complete game three-hitter to lead the Saints to the series opening victory over Saint Peter’s. He allowed just one unearned run and only five Peacocks reached base safely in his nine innings of work as he limited Saint Peter’s to a miniscule .103 team batting average. Miller also induced the Peacocks into three double plays in improving to 4-2 in conference action as the Saints’ No. 1 weekend starter.
