Quinnipiac Defeats Canisius 2-0 in Softball Championship Opening Game

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Behind 6.1 scoreless innings from Sydney Robey, the sixth seeded Quinnipiac Bobcats defeated the third seeded Canisius Golden Griffs 2-0 in the first game of the 2016 MAAC Softball Championship.
The Bobcats will now face second seeded Manhattan on Thursday, May 12 at 9:00 a.m. The Griffs will face the the loser of Marist and Monmouth/Fairfield.
Quinnipiac got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kat Vitale scored on an E-4 from third base. The Bobcats would add an insurance run in the sixth inning when Erin Larsen drove in Dani Edmands on an RBI double.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Griffs would get two runners on after Nappo reached on an E-4 and Berzins singled, which took Robey out of the game. Casey Herzog would come in to earn the save after getting a groundout and striking out Castro on three pitches to give the Bobcats its first MAAC win since joining the conference.
The 2016 MAAC Softball Championship is a double elimination style tournament with the championship final taking place on Saturday, May 14 at noon. If the team coming out of the loser’s bracket defeats the team in the winners’ bracket, the second and deciding game will take place at 2:30 p.m.
The winner of the 2016 MAAC Softball Championship will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Softball Selection Show is on Sunday, May 15 on ESPNU at 10:00 p.m.
