LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - Marist softball catcher/second baseman Claire Oberdorf was named one of 10 finalists for the 2016 Schutt Sports/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I National Freshman of the Year, it was announced Thursday. The organization had chosen Oberdorf to be on the top 25 list April 21.
The top three finalists for the award will be voted on and released May 25. The recipient will be presented with the trophy during a live ceremony at the Women's College World Series banquet May 31.
Oberdorf was selected Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year during the league's awards banquet May 11 in McCann Center. She was a three-time Rookie of the Week during the regular season and led the Red Foxes with 14 multi-RBI games and a .391 batting average. She had 15 multi-hit games, including Marist's only two 4-hit games in 2016.
In Marist's 3-0 shutout of no. 5 Fairfield in the MAAC Tournament earlier today Oberdorf went 1-for-2. The Red Foxes will square off with no. 6 Quinnipiac at 11 a.m. May 13 in their next postseason contest on Gartland Field.
