Jameson Takes First in 10k AT NCAA East Prelims

JACKSONVILLE, FL - On Friday night, the Iona College men’s and women’s outdoor track & field team kicked things off at the NCAA Division I East Preliminaries at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, FL.

Senior Tara Jameson led the charge in the 10,000-meter run, holding off Chelsea Blaase of Tennessee to take first place with a time of 34:10.54. Jameson qualified for NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, OR. The finals are scheduled to take place on Thursda, June 9 at 7:08pm PT/ 10:08 ET. Jameson will still compete in the 5,000 meter-run on Saturday, May 28 at 8:05pm as a part of the prelimimary competition.

This is the third straight year a member of the Iona women's team has reached the championships with Kate Avery making it 2014 and '15; teammate Rosie Clarke joined her last year, competing in the 1,500-meter run

Sophomore Liam Dee ran in the second heat of the men’s 1,500 meter run, he placed ninth in his heat and 26th overall with a time of 3:48.31. Dee will now take his attention to the 5,000-meter run on Saturday May 28 at 8:45pm. 

Senior Jake Byrne placed 31st in the 10,000 meter-run with a time of 30:54.71.  

The Maroon & Gold will continue at the NCAA Division 1 East Preliminaries tomorrow with sophomore Jessica Scheriff in the women’s steeplechase and the trio of sophomore Johannes Motschmann, junior Brandon Allen and senior Xavier King in the men’s steeplechase. The races start at 8:50 PM and 9:30 PM respectively.
