EDISON, N.J. – The Monmouth University Hawks have claimed its second straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Overall Commissioner’s Cup in 2015-16. The Hawks also secured the Men’s Commissioner’s Cup for the third year in a row, while Marist College won the Women’s Commissioner’s Cup for the 11th time in program history.
The MAAC Commissioner’s Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 25 championship athletic events conducted within the MAAC. Each institution is scored in all championships that it fields a varsity team. However, only the scores from the men’s and women’s basketball participation, plus the other top six men’s and other top six women’s championships are used to determine an institution’s total points.
Monmouth’s performance during the 2015-16 season helped capture back-to-back Overall Commissioner’s Cup and third straight Men’s Commissioner’s Cup. During the 2015-16 campaign, Monmouth claimed MAAC championships in Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track and Field, Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track and Field, and Men’s Tennis.
“I would like to congratulate Monmouth University, athletic director Marilyn McNeil, its student-athletes, coaches and administrators in winning the MAAC Overall Commissioner’s Cup and Men’s Commissioner’s Cup,” notes MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “Since its first season in the league in 2013, Monmouth’s overall athletic program has exceled and proven to be a winning institution by claiming its second consecutive Overall Commissioner’s Cup and third straight Men’s Commissioner’s Cup.”
"Our Monmouth student-athletes commit to the highest level of excellence in all of their pursuits," said Monmouth Vice President and Director of Athletics. "The MAAC Commissioner's Cup is emblematic of the athletics excellence of the whole - and everyone of our Hawks contributed. We are so proud- the athletes, guided by their coaches and supported by the administrative staff, all share in the credit."
Marist won its 11th overall Women’s Commissioner’s Cup during the 2015-16 Academic Year; its sixth cup in seven seasons. The Red Foxes won MAAC championships in Women’s Swimming & Diving and Softball.
“Congratulations to Marist College, athletic director Tim Murray, and it’s Women’s programs on winning their 11th MAAC Women’s Commissioner’s Cup,” added Ensor. “Marist continues to be one of the most competitive programs in the conference and challenges in the Cup race every year. Winning a league best, 11 Women’s Cups, shows the competitiveness of their program and reflects the school’s commitment to excellence on the field and in the classroom.”
"I continue to be impressed by the outstanding efforts by all of our athletes as they compete on the athletic fields and in the classroom,” said Tim Murray, Marist Director of Athletics. “The competitiveness of the MAAC continues to improve each year, elevating the prominence of this award. Congratulations to our terrific coaching staff and administrative team as well, for their great work, providing an environment for our athletes to excel!"
