POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist Director of Athletics Tim Murray has announced the hiring of Jason Sacher as the head women’s tennis coach. After coaching the Red Foxes for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, Sacher returns to the program after a coaching stint with Cornell.
“I’m very excited to have Jason back as part of the Marist coaching family,” Murray said. “He did an outstanding job in his first tenure as the head coach, particularly in his ability to recruit high level student-athletes. I’m confident that he will have our program in contention to win the MAAC.”
Sacher joined the Marist tennis coaching staff in August, 2013 and served as the interim women's head coach for the 2014 season alongside his responsibilities as an assistant coach for the men's tennis team.
In his first season at the helm, Sacher led the Red Foxes to a 6-10 overall record with a 5-3 mark in the MAAC. Marist earned the fourth seed for the MAAC Tournament. Sacher coached Marielle Campbell to an All-MAAC Second Team selection at fourth singles and five MAAC All-Academic student-athletes: Campbell, Kaye Eastman, Nikki Rohan, Sabrina Tahir, and Lisa Ventimiglia.
Sacher is a 2011 graduate of NYU where he played both #1 singles and #1 doubles for the Violets' men's tennis team. He graduated with a BS in Sports Management.
Since graduating, Sacher has spent the past two years coaching top nationally-ranked junior players in the New York area. As a junior player, Sacher was ranked in the top-10 in the eastern section throughout multiple age groups and was ranked as high as top 100 nationally.
"I am so excited and thankful to be back at Marist. I want to personally thank Tim Murray. The trust and relationship I have with him, Tim Smith, Ron Lane and many in the athletics department were big reasons why I chose to come back,” Sacher said.
“Additionally, having the opportunity to finish what I started and coach a talented and high character squad made it an attractive place to be at. I love Marist and all that it has to offer. I'm looking forward to the challenges ahead and continuing to build a competitive MAAC championship contender."
The Marist women’s tennis team went 5-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competition in the 2015-16 season. The Red Foxes qualified for the conference championships. The program has made four NCAA Tournament appearances in its history: 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2013.
