EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced Fairfield University’s honorees to be inducted in the MAAC Honor Roll. The honorees will be enshrined in “The MAAC Experience” exhibit at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on October 15.

Each member institution of the MAAC honors one male and one female from its basketball “family” as part of the 2016 induction class. A dinner event will be on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Court of Dreams to recognize the Honor Roll inductees.

Each honoree will be profiled in the game program for the 2017 MAAC Basketball Championships, and will also be featured in a video display at “The MAAC Experience.”

Arthur “A.J.” Wynder (1983-1987) Fairfield University

A.J. Wynder left his mark on the Fairfield University men’s basketball program after playing four years for the Stags, beginning with the 1983-84 season. The guard is best remembered for his buzzer-beating game-tying shot in regulation against Iona College in the 1987 MAAC Tournament championship game. His long jumper tied the game at 65-65 and completed the Stags’ 18-point comeback, trailing the Gaels 53-35 with 14:25 left in the second half. The guard finished his career with 1,313 points, 522 assists, and 220 steals. He earned All-MAAC honors as a senior. Wynder became the first Stag to appear in an NBA game, playing with the Boston Celtics alongside Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parrish. He also represented the United States at the 1995 Pan American Games, earning a silver medal. He played a long career in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), finishing up his time in the league after the 1995-96 campaign. He currently serves as head coach at Nassau Community College where his teams have posted three straight 20-win seasons and earned third place in the NJCAA Division III national tournament. He has posted a winning season in each of his 19 years as head coach, including 12 20-win campaigns.

Lisa Mikelic (1987-1991) Fairfield University

Lisa Mikelic helped Fairfield University win its first two MAAC women’s basketball championships as the Stags brought home the crown in 1988 and 1991. In 1988, Mikelic earned the MAAC Rookie of the Year and was a member of the conference’s All-Rookie squad. She would go on to capture All-MAAC honors in 1989, 1990, and 1991. During the 1991 MAAC tournament, the forward netted two game-winning buzzer-beating shots to defeat Manhattan in the semifinal contest and Saint Peter’s in the championship game. Mikelic served as a team captain in her senior season. She ended her career as the second-leading scorer in school history with 1,681 points and owned a 14.4 scoring average.
