Baumeister Places 55th in Rio Olympics Marathon

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Former Iona College cross country / track & field runner Anna Holm Baumeister finished 55th out of 157 competitors in the 2016 Olympic Games women's marathon Sunday morning. Baumeister represented Denmark in Rio and finishing the 26.2-mile course in 2:39:49.

Baumeister finished 15:45 behind the race winner, Kenya's Jemina Jelagat Sumgong. Bahrain's Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa earned the silver medal and Ethiopia's Mare Dibaba took bronze. Baumeister was the second Danish finisher and 25th European overall.

Baumeister's performance was the third and final performance for an former Iona runner at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad. Germany's Maya Rehberg finished 15th in her heat in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase preliminary round yesterday morning and the United States' Leonard Korir '12 was 14th in the men's 10,000-meter final last night.
