MAAC Sports
Wilson Offensive Player of the Week
Dave Nigro, Monmouth
Sr., F, Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro
Nigro scored twice and added an assist on Wednesday against Columbia. His back-heel flick set up Jake Areman’s first goal as a Hawk to give Monmouth a 1-0 lead, before his PK pushed the Hawks back in front 2-1. He once again gave Monmouth the lead, 3-2, collecting the ball in traffic in the box, before finishing inside the left post in the 63rd minute. The five-point game was the second of Nigro’s career following a two-goal, one-assist performance in the 2014 season opener against UMass Lowell. Nigro now leads Monmouth with three goals and eight points on the season.
Wilson Defensive Player of the Week
Thomas Teupen, Canisius
Sr., D, Munster, Germany
Canisius senior Thomas Teupen scored his second goal of the season, and his second career game-winning goal in seven days, as the Griffs defeated St. Bonaventure 1-0 Sept. 16 at the Demske Sports Complex. Teupen, who serves as one of the team’s backs, came forward on a corner kick opportunity in the game’s sixth minute and redirected a header into the back of the goal to lead the Blue and Gold to the win. That win over the Bonnies, one of Canisius’ oldest rivals, extended the Griffs’ winning streak in the series to six.
Wilson Rookie of the Week
Eamon Whelan, Quinnipiac
Fr., F, New Fairfield, CT
Whelan scored both goals in Quinnipiac’s 2-0 win over cross-town rival Yale on Wednesday, Sept. 14, giving him a team-leading four goals on the season. He snapped a header from 15 yards out for his first goal of the afternoon just 27:45 into the game to make it 1-0 Bobcats, then one-timed a shot with 19:52 remaining in the second half that hit off the left post and into the back of the net. Whelan then recorded one shot in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Holy Cross – giving him a team-high 13 shots in seven games thus far in 2016.
