Iona's Marina Lizarazu Named Met Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week

EDISON, NJ – Iona College senior guard Marina Lizarazu was named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (Met) Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Lizarazu joins teammate, sophomore guard Alexis Lewis and Rider University senior guard Robin Perkins as the only Women’s Basketball players from the MAAC to take home the award this season.
The Madrid, Spain native was also named the LifeStorage MAAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday, January 23 as announced by the league office. Lizarazu averaged 25.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game in a 2-0 week for Iona.
In the Gaels’ 76-62 win over Manhattan College on Friday, January 20 Lizarazu tallied a career-high 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 from behind the arc, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. The senior recorded six assists, four rebounds, and four steals in 40 minutes of action.
On Sunday, January 22 Lizarazu scored a game-high 24 points for the Gaels in their 60-54 victory over Monmouth University. She shot 7-of-16 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. The 24-point effort marked her sixth straight contest with 20 or more points. Lizarazu logged 40 minutes of action for the second game in a row.
This season, Lizarazu is averaging 13.8 points, 3.9 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.6 steals per game. She is shooting 40.5 percent from the field, 34.5 percent from three, and 78.1 percent from the free-throw line.
She ranks first in the MAAC in assists (71) and assists per game (3.9), third in steals (46) and steals per game (2.6), seventh in scoring (13.8 ppg), seventh in free-throw percentage (78.1%), fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.2), and sixth in minutes played per game (33.9).
