SPAIN – Damika Martinez ’15, the leading scorer in Iona College and MAAC history, has taken the next step in her professional basketball career, joining the Universidad de Oviedo program in Spain.
Martinez arrived in Spain two days ago, and will soon be playing with the program until the conclusion of its season in April. The three-time MAAC Player of the Year will be joining fellow Maroon & Gold alum Joy Adams ’16 on the court for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
“I am incredibly excited for this opportunity. Being able to continue to my career and now play with Joy again will be a very fun experience.”
When asked about having a fellow Gael with her in Spain, Adams stated: “I think it’s really cool that we get to play together one more year.” Continuing, Adams mentioned, “In college we would always joke about playing professional basketball together. I still can’t believe it’s actually happening. She will be a great addition to our team.”
Thus far this season, Adams is averaging 22.0 PPG, 10.4 RPG, and 2.8 APG.
Martinez, the three-time All-Met First Team selection, led the MAAC in scoring all four years she played. Her 2,581 career points rank top 50 all-time in division I history, and third all-time in the New York Metropolitan area behind Monclair State’s Carol Blazejowski ’78, and Rutgers’ Sue Wicks ’88.
The Universidad de Oviedo’s next game in on Saturday, Jan. 14 against the Barcelona team.
