Monmouth University Clinches Fifth-Straight MAAC Women’s Soccer Regular Season Championship

EDISON, NJ – Monmouth University (11-3-2, 8-1 MAAC) has clinched the MAAC Women’s Soccer Regular Season title for the fifth consecutive season and earns the No. 1 overall seed in the upcoming championship. The 2017 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship takes place, October 28-November 1, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, FL.
 
The Hawks earn the 2017 MAAC Women’s Soccer Regular Season Championship after a 2-0, victory over Fairfield University this evening. Monmouth was paced by a pair of goals, the first by graduate back Gabriella Cuevas (29’). Sophomore forward Dana Scheriff (80’) followed with the second tally.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Knaub, stopped four shots and recorded her league-leading 10th clean sheet of the season in the 2-0 defeat of the Stags. Knaub, a three-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Week has started all 16 games thus far for Monmouth in goal. She has recorded 62 saves and surrendered 12 goals this season.
 
As the No. 1 seed in the 2017 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship, Monmouth takes the pitch for its first game in the quarterfinal round on Sunday, October 29, at 2:15 p.m. on Field 17. The Hawks face the winner of a first round matchup that features the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds (have yet to be determined). Monmouth’s quarterfinal contest is set to air on ESPN3.
 
The two-time MAAC Women’s Soccer Champions, Monmouth improved its five-year overall MAAC record to (43-3-3) and (24-1-0) at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn. The Hawks are now (14-1) in their last 15 home games, dating to October 1, 2016.
 
Red-shirt sophomore forward, Madie Gibson leads the team in points with 14 (three goals, eight assists). Gibson’s eight assists are the second-most in the conference and her 14 points are the ninth-most. The forward took home the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honor on October 9. Senior forward Rachelle Ross leads the Hawks in goals (five) and is tied for the eighth-most in the league. Ross was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week once this season (October 2).
 
As a result of Monmouth’s win and a tie earlier this afternoon, Manhattan College (8-6-2, 6-2-1 MAAC) has secured the No. 2 seed in the 2017 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship.
