PRINCETON, NJ – The 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Soccer Champions, Monmouth University (15-3-2) are set to face Ivy League Champions, Princeton University (14-2) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The first round matchup is slated for Friday, November 10, at 7:00 p.m. at Roberts Stadium in Princeton, NJ.
Monmouth Notes: Monmouth returns to the NCAA Championship for the third time as a member of the MAAC. The Hawks have posted an (0-2) record in two prior appearances, while a member of the league. Monmouth seeks its first NCAA Tournament win in program history, and the first by a conference member since Fairfield University won a play-in game in 1997.
Fly Hawks: Red-shirt senior back Allie Girardi was named the 2017 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship Most Outstanding Player. Red-shirt sophomore forward Madie Gibson, senior midfield Miranda Konstantinides, and sophomore midfield/forward Lexie Palladino were named to the All-Championship Team.
Head-to-Head: The Hawks and Tigers meet for the second time this season. Princeton defeated Monmouth, 3-0, in the teams lone regular season matchup on August 25, in Princeton, NJ. The Hawks lead the all-time season series with the Tigers (9-5-0). Monmouth last defeated Princeton on November 3, 1998, (4-1).
MAAC Postseason History: MAAC women's soccer teams are a combined (1-18) in NCAA Championship play dating to 1997. The only team to win a game in the championship was Fairfield University in 1997. The Stags defeated Central Connecticut State in a play-in game, 2-1.
MAAC Championship Recap: The 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Soccer Championship took place, October 28-November 1, and returned to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, in Lake Buena Vista, FL for the first time since 2013. No. 1 Monmouth defeated No. 2 Manhattan, 5-1, to claim its second-straight MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship. The Hawks won their third MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship and second in Disney. Monmouth is the first team to win consecutive MAAC Women’s Soccer Championships since former conference member Loyola (MD) won five-straight (2000-04). Since joining the league in 2013, Monmouth is (8-2) in MAAC Championship games. The eight wins are the most by a MAAC team over the span.
Disney Championship History: This year's Women's Soccer Championship, marked the fifth time in conference history that the event was held in Disney. The MAAC along with Walt Disney World Resorts, enters its 19th year of hosting MAAC Championships in Lake Buena Vista, FL, as part of the conference’s mission to provide the best experience for its student-athletes and its fans. The sports included in the rotation to be held at ESPN Wide World of Sports include Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Women’s Soccer, and Volleyball.
Seed-by-Seed: Since 2007 the No. 1 overall seed has claimed the MAAC Women's Soccer Championship five times, the most of any seed over the span. The No. 3 seed captured the next most championships over the 10-year span with three.
About the 2017 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship:
First-round games will be played Nov. 10, 11 and 12 at campus sites. Second-round games will be played Friday, Nov. 17 at campus sites and third-round games will be played Sunday, Nov. 19 at the same campus sites. Quarterfinal games will be played Nov. 24 or 25 also on campus sites.
The 36th annual NCAA Women’s College Cup will be played Dec. 1 and 3 at Orlando City Soccer Stadium in Orlando, Florida with UCF and Central Florida Sports Commission serving as co-hosts. The first national semifinal will be played and broadcast live on ESPNU at 5 p.m. Eastern time Friday, Dec. 1. The second semifinal will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. Eastern time live on ESPNU. The national championship match will take place at noon Eastern time Sunday, Dec. 3 and will also broadcast live on ESPNU.
