Morenaite To Join Iona Men's Cross Country At NCAA Championship
INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee announced today the team and individual qualifiers for the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships. Joining the Iona College men's cross country team at the meet next weekend will be freshman Egle Morenaite of the women's program as she was announced as an individual qualifier from the Northeast Region.
Morenaite earned her spot in the championship field following a seventh place showing at the Northeast Regional Meet 6k on Friday. The freshman also earned the individual championship at the MAAC Cross Country Championship, helping the Maroon & Gold to a second straight and 12th in the past 13 years. For her efforts, she was named the meet's Most Outstanding Runner as well as the Most Outstanding Freshman.
The men's program earned its 17th straight trip to the NCAA meet with a second place showing at the Northeast Regional. All five of Iona's scorers at the meet earned All-Region honors.
In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals qualified at their respective NCAA regional competitions. Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large. Thirty-eight individuals were selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 in their regions.
University of Louisville will host the championships, Saturday, November 18, at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park located in Louisville, Kentucky. The women's race will begin at 10:45 a.m. Eastern Time, followed by the men's race at 11:45 a.m. Eastern Time.
