Iona Cross Country Heads to Kentucky to Compete in NCAA Championships

– The 2017 MAAC Men’s Cross Country Champions, the Iona College Gaels will compete at the NCAA Championships tomorrow in Louisville, Kentucky. The men will be joined by 2017 MAAC Most Outstanding Female Runner and Female Rookie of the Year Iona’s own Egle Morenaite.
 
At the 2017 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships the Iona men finished in second place behind Syracuse University. The second place finish gave them their 17th straight automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Senior Johannes Motschmann, senior Liam Dee, senior Gilbert Kirui, graduate student Chartt Miller, and senior Andrew Tario all received All-Region honors for their performances at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships.
 
Morenaite received an individual qualifying bid to compete in the NCAA Championships with her seventh place finish in the Northeast Regional Championships. The freshman also received All-Region honors.
 
Iona men’s cross country has finished in the top-10 in 14 of the past 15 NCAA Championships and have finished fifth or better six times. The Gaels had their best finishes in 2006 and 2007 as they placed second both years.
 
The NCAA Cross Country Championships will be hosted by the University of Louisville at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, KY. The women will run at 10:45 a.m. and the men will compete at 11:45 a.m.
