EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced the 2017 Men’s Soccer All-MAAC Teams, and major award winners during the league’s postseason awards show.
Allen Gavilanes of Marist College is the 2017 MAAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Year and MAAC Rookie of the Year. Gavilanes made an immediate impact in his rookie season for the Marist Red Foxes. The freshman led the MAAC in points (25) and points per game (1.39) while finishing third in the conference with eight goals. Gavilanes recorded nine assists and finished with an average of 0.50 assists per game, which both rank second in the MAAC. Gavilanes is the first student-athlete to be named MAAC Offensive Player of the Year and MAAC Rookie of the Year since Omar Alfonso of Loyola Maryland in 2003. Marist College has won the last two MAAC Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Alex Grattarola of Canisius College is the 2017 MAAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Year. Grattarola helped anchor a Canisius defense that recorded six shutouts during the regular season, which is tied for third-best in the conference. Canisius College has won the last two MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Manhattan College sophomore goalkeeper, Marcellin Gohier, is the 2017 MAAC Men’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Year. During the regular season, Gohier recorded six shutouts, a league-best 0.59 goals against average and a .862 save percentage. In 1,211 minutes played in the net, Gohier only allowed eight goals to opponents this season. His 0.59 goals against average mark is 12th best in the nation. Manhattan allowed the fewest goals to opponents this season with Gohier leading the charge.
The 2017 BSN Sports Coach of the Year is Carl Rees from Fairfield. Under Coach Rees, the Stags claimed their first MAAC Men’s Soccer Regular Season Championship with an 11-4-2 overall record and a 7-1-2 conference record. Fairfield earned the number one overall seed in this year’s MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship. This is the second time Rees has been named MAAC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year.
